While Amir's clan maintained a number of seemingly unusual customs (such as archery, different clothing styles, and sleeping customs), her earnestness and good nature quickly endeared her to her new family. Unfortunately, the Halgals returned after several marriages between Halgal girls and members of the powerful Numaji nomad clan went sour and all the brides died. As Amir was the only Halgal woman left alive and technically unattached (as women were only considered truly married once they conceived a child with their husband), the Halgals planned to shuttle Amir off for the sake of political marriage.
Instead, the Eihons and other townspeople fought back fiercely; the conflict escalated under the leadership of the Halgals and their allies by Amir's warlike father. In the end, the Halgals suffered defeat, while much of Amir's new town was destroyed. Before and after the attack, Amir grew closer to the Eihons and especially Karluk. After the death of her father, Amir bid farewell to her remaining family members and set out to rebuild her lifestyle with the Eihons.
As the manga continues, Amir finds and cares for a wounded hawk, helps a clumsy friend improve her sewing, teaches her family members how to shoot arrows, fits herself into the local sewing and baking circle, and more.
● (original) world: N/A● abilities:
Amir has no superpowers. However, she has many skills, as she was trained from very young to hone all the talents required for an excellent bride in her culture. She also possesses many of the skills essential for nomadic living due to growing up with the Halgal clan. These include:
- Sewing/embroidery: Amir can sew complex garments and incredibly intricate embroidered patterns.
- Cooking: Amir can cook a wide range of dishes, from bread to rabbit stew to goat!
- Herding: Speaking of goats, Amir is great at looking after sheep. She can herd on horseback, uses a rope/whip to drive herds, and can even deadlift a fully grown goat.
- Dancing/music: Amir is a good singer, enjoys dancing, and can play traditional stringed lute-like instruments.
- General housekeeping
- Archery: Amir is skilled at making bows and arrows, as well as bow hunting -- on horseback or on foot. She can stalk small prey, like rabbits, birds, and foxes, or even bring down larger animals like goats while riding.
- Horseriding: Amir is a very proficient rider and maintains a good relationship with her horse, Sulkeek.
● strengths:
Amir is strong, capable, kind, thoughtful, gentle, and brave. Her partially nomadic upbringing has made her capable of riding and surviving while constantly on the move, able to hunt and forage for extra food should she need to. Raised to be an exemplary bride from a young age, she is also considerate, skilled in domestic work, and softspoken. Amir's earnestness and hardworking nature, in particular, are seen by other characters as making up for her age. And though a bit wild in personality compared to the typical town-raised girl, Amir always seems to be looking for ways to help out or return favors -- she'll use gifts of cloth to make garments for her husband, hunt birds to present as gifts in return for bread, and volunteer to help track down nomadic relatives.
Though inwardly torn when her father demands she return to the Halgals, Amir's love for her husband and respect for his determination to keep her in the Eihon family inspires her to take up arms in the raid on the town. She defends herself and the town, patches up her brother (who was part of the raiding party), and even cries over the death of her father, even though it was his wish to send her in marriage to the same clan who beat the other Halgal brides (her loving relatives) to death.
It is in caring for her husband, friends, and family that Amir shows both her nurturing side and her self-sufficiency, as she uses both to care for those closest to her. In short, she's a great catch all-around!
● weaknesses: Amir has a tendency to fret over Karluk, much to his distress. In fact, she can take this to extremes; when Karluk takes ill, Amir worries over him and stays up late into the night to try and tend to his sickness, leading to her own exhaustion and decline in health. For his part, Karluk is aware Amir is older, taller, and stronger than him, but wants her to see him as a husband, not a child. Though they clearly love each other, this is an ongoing source of insecurity for Karluk, though Amir largely overlooks the issue.
Family ties, especially filial piety, are extremely important to Amir. Even when faced with marriage into the cruel Numaji clan, Amir finds it difficult to disobey her father and insist she stay with the Eihons. And this is after learning that the Numaji have already killed several of the other Halgal brides through domestic abuse!
Amir has a bit of an impulsive streak, which can lead to some abrupt and sometimes worrisome decisions. When Karluk mentions an interest in trying rabbit stew, for instance, she rides off immediately to a nearby lakeshore to hunt them -- an area where wolves are rumored to have menaced the townspeople earlier. Karluk ends up riding after her in a panic, though Amir ends up being all right in the end.
